What’s New?

End of Year Musings

Thanks to Albert and David F. who hosted our annual Holiday Dinner at their home in Hillcrest.  And Thanks to Bob C., Luciano, Jay, Jim and others for overseeing the food and room set up.  The room was full of conversation and laughter.
The Dinner was almost immediately followed by the LGBT Center's "Home for the Holidays" at which FOG had its first information table since the Covid lockdown.  Neal R., Jim H. and John K. talked to a lot of community members who were not familiar with FOG and saw a lot of long-time friends.  We were also invited to the stage to say a few words about our group and light a candle for the Holidays.
We used the Centers event to unveil a new informational "palm card" (shown below).  People like the size and the color photos.  Thanks to all our "models" for their smiles.
The Wednesdays and Saturdays coffees continue to grow.  The new shopping center location has been a popular choice.  We have literally watched them remodel the mall around us.
The Fellowship wants to wish everyone a healthy, safe and Happy Holiday Season and the best in the New Year.

Thanking our Veterans

At our Saturday Coffee and Conversation several of our FOG Military Veteran Members received free coffee from Starbucks in honor of Veterans Day.  Afterwards FOG veterans and friends met in the California Pizza Kitchen and the veterans were honored with a free lunch and coupons for additional meals from the restaurant.
Veterans Day, also known as Armistice Day, is always celebrated on November 11 to commemorate the signing of the treaty to end World War One.  It went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.
We also have several Veteran Members on the Veterans Wall of Honor in the  LGBT Center.  Their names are placed there because of their service and additional contributions to society.

It was an ideal summer night for our Annual FOG Business Meeting, elections and Banquet in the open lanai room at the Bali Hai overlooking San Diego Harbor and skyline.
The evening began with drinks and socializing.  Guests received a lei and a raffle ticket and joined the building crowd for conversation and laughter.
Tom Phillips and Mike Wasilewski made sure all the registrations were in order.  We reached the rooms capacity in pre-paid reservations.
The Business meeting began at 6:45, chaired by President Albert Padilla.  By acclamation Vice-President John Keasler was elected to the office of President. Michael Wasilewski to the office of Director At Large.  Michael had already served in that role for several months.  A revised By-Laws were also approved.
The buffet style dinner included pork, chicken and vegetarian entrees, seasoned mashed potatoes, sweet and sour vegetables, salad and fresh rolls.  The Bali Hai chefs always serve delicious fair.
After dinner we sliced the 30th Anniversary cake.
Ted Callum moderated our program for the evening with humor and reflection.  We remembered the late former President John Kozjak.  Joel Nimon was recognized for his many years as newsletter editor.  Joel Nimon was recognized for his many years a newsletter editor.  Albert Padilla, Tom Phillips and James Hurtado were honored for their service.

Our organization began when our two founding members met through an ad one of them had placed in a local newspaper, looking for like-minded gay men over 40 who wanted to “socialize and pursue educational, entertainment and cultural interests”. The first meeting took place on September 7, 1993 with 10 people in attendance and we now number around 200 members. Learn more on our About page.
