Our History
Our organization began when our two founding members met through an ad one of them had placed in a local newspaper, looking for like-minded gay men over 40 who wanted to “socialize and pursue educational, entertainment and cultural interests,” a goal that was later adopted as the group’s general purpose. The first meeting of the group was held on September 7, 1993 with 10 individuals present. The first activities that the group undertook were a general RAP group, a visit to the Point Loma Lighthouse, a picnic at Ellen Browning Scripps Park in La Jolla, and a visit to the San Diego Zoo. Other activities soon followed, including monthly tag-a-longs to the Fleet Science Theater, a Walkabout in Tijuana, a trip to Rosarito Beach, a play at the Fritz Theater, a trip to the Steven Birch Aquarium, a Thrift-Shop-Hop, attendance at a Quantum Health Seminar with Deepak Chopra the featured speaker, and Monday Night at the Movies. At this point, the group was so informal that it did not even have a name. But a name it needed. Many were suggested, including “Gays Over 40 Activity Group (GOFAG)”, Gay Blades, Silver and Gold Men’s Group, and many others. Ultimately, a secret ballot vote made the official name of the organization “The Fellowship of Old Gays (FOG).” In 2012, it became evident that FOG needed to become a more formal organization, because it needed legitimacy as a legal entity to be able to obtain liability insurance for its members. Liability insurance would not only insure its members, but would enable it to participate in community events such as the Pride Parade and Festival, the San Diego County Fair, the South Bay and North County Pride events and other events that would allow us a presence and help us contact potential members. So, on April 26t, 2012, FOG became incorporated under section 501 (c) (7) of the Internal Revenue Code. As part of this process, a formal Board of Directors was established and By-laws were written and adopted. The Board consists of the President, the Vice-President, the Secretary, the Treasurer, and 3 at-large board members. Since its beginning, FOG has continued to grow and diversify in its activities. The organization now has around 200 members who continue to celebrate our original general-purpose statement, that we “Socialize and pursue education, Entertainment and Cultural Interests.”
